BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The term complete game can be used to describe Notre Dame College's 100-58 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College, on Wednesday evening. The Falcons were led by junior
Jen Oduho, who shot 11-for-11 for a season-high 26 points, while the team totaled 60-percent shooting, 20 assists and 16 steals.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 20-12 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter. But in less than a minute, the Bobcats' Brittany Stawovy stole the ball twice, which helped WVWC go on a 7-0 run, making the score 20-19. NDC called a timeout with 2:30 on the clock and then came back onto the floor on a mission.
The Falcons pushed the pace and used defensive pressure to force a few bad passes. The result was an 11-2 NDC run to end the first quarter. Oduho had nine points on 4-of-4 shooting and senior
Jessie Stout went 3-for-3, totaling seven points. NDC shot the ball at 74-percent. With 31 first quarter points, the Falcons tied their season-high for a quarter.
The second quarter was just as impressive for the road team. From the time the score was a difference of one point (20-19), Notre Dame went on a 37-15 offensive tear. They outscored the Bobcats by 13 points in the second stanza and led 57-34 at halftime.
For NDC, Oduho started the game 8-for-8 from the field and 3-for-3 from three point land for 19 first half points, which was already a season-high. As a team, the Falcons shot 64-percent in the first half.
"We we're focused on playing together and making reads on offense," said head coach
Lauren Macer. "Jen was able to capitalize and convert when the ball was in her hands. I was proud of the way she shot tonight and how the team encouraged her to keep shooting them."
Oduho came out in the third quarter and made two more jumpers within three minutes. She then hit her 11th shot of the night, which was a three-pointer with 6:09 on the clock. Notre Dame's lead swelled to 41 points, 86-45, by the end of the third quarter.
Theresa Parr had seven of her 11 points in the third quarter.
The only other player in program history to make at least eight baskets and shoot 100-percent was Yvette Hunter in 2007. But Hunter went 9-for-9 in that game. There are only three players in NCAA Division II who have shot 100-percent from the field this season, while making the minimum number of shots. However, all three of those players went 10-for-10, making Oduho the first to go 11-for-11 in DII in 2019-20.
Notre Dame did not shoot as well in the fourth quarter, but still outscored WVWC by one point, 14-13.
Five players scored in double-digits for NDC and three of them (Parr,
Kyleigh Ramlow and
Marisa Finazzo) came off the bench. Finazzo's 11 points were a season-high and she went 5-for-5 from the field.
Tamia Ridley brought down a season-high eight rebounds in nine minutes.
As a team, NDC scored 100 points for the first time this season. The Falcons made 43 field goals, which is second most in program history and shot 59.7-percent, which is fifth highest in program history. They stole the ball 16 times, which is tied for second most this season.
The Notre Dame defense was also impressive, as they held an opponent below 60 points for the eighth time in 2019-20. Wesleyan shot below 40-percent and made just eight combined shots in the second half.
"On defense we tried to focus on the little things and play together," Macer explained. "We focused on getting stops and making good decisions after that."
NDC comes home to play Davis & Elkins College on February 8. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
