URBANA, Ohio – On Saturday, Notre Dame College won their 24th game of the season, which is the program's Division II-era record. They also added to their program record in road wins, with their 12th of the campaign. Although Urbana University found ways to get back into the game, the Falcons held them off in the fourth quarter and won 90-79.
Notre Dame had four steals in the first quarter and built up an eight-point lead, 16-8, with 1:25 remaining. The Falcons would finish the first with 10 points off turnovers. But, Urbana went on an 8-2 run in the final 1:15 of the quarter. Three offensive rebounds in the final minute helped the Blue Knights get second chance opportunities and cut NDC's lead to two points, 18-16, after 10 minutes.
To start the second quarter, the Falcons went on a 10-2 run to pull ahead by 10 points, 28-18, less than three minutes into the stanza. During the run, Notre Dame benefited from offensive rebounds. On back-to-back possessions, a total of four offensive boards led to back-to-back threes by
Jada Marone.
NDC increased their lead to 12 points twice in the second quarter and at halftime, the Falcons led 42-33. Marone had 12 points, two assists and two steals and
Jessie Stout totaled six points and seven rebounds in the first half.
Between the 6:29-mark and the 2:53-mark in the third quarter, the Blue Knights put together an 11-2 run. Weston Minnich knocked down a three pointer to give Urbana their first lead since the beginning of the first quarter.
Head Coach
Lauren Macer spoke about the UU comeback as a wakeup call.
"It just proves that the game isn't over until 40 minutes are up," she said. "We have to continue to work one possession at a time."
With just 1:37 on the third quarter clock, Urbana led 58-55 and that's when Notre Dame flipped the switch. Marone knocked down a three pointer, hit two free throws on the next possession and then ended the quarter with a steal and an assist to
Seina Adachi, who broke free and beat the buzzer with a layup. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Falcons led by four points, 62-58.
Urbana cut the Falcons' lead to one point in the fourth quarter, but Notre Dame did not give the lead away. Marone was a big reason why Notre Dame retained the lead. After scoring 10 points in third quarter, she added 13 in fourth. On the night, the sophomore reached her career-high with 35 points, which is also sixth most in program history. She finished the game with 15 made free throws, which is second in program history, four behind Coach Macer's record.
To go along with those points, Marone had five assists and five steals. Adachi had 14 points with five rebounds and three steals. The Falcons had 23 points off turnovers.
Of Urbana's 79 points, 57 of them came from Tyra James (29) and Sylvia Hudson (28). Those two also combined for 26 rebounds.
Notre Dame has clinched the second seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament and will play at noon, on March 5. Their opponent will be the winner of the No. 7 Wheeling vs. No. 10 Davis & Elkins matchup, which will take place at noon, on March 4.
