SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College women's basketball team played an excellent second half against Urbana, making 51.4 percent of their shots. But it was not enough to overcome a first-half deficit, leading to NDC's second loss of the season.
The Blue Knights came out firing on all cylinders, scoring 30 points in the first quarter, and securing 19 rebounds on the two teams' 27 combined misses. Notre Dame went into halftime trailing 52-25 at home.
The second half was a different story however, as the Falcons adjusted to play to win each of the final two quarters 23-20 and 22-19.
"In the second half we looked more like us, and got back to getting at the rum and going hard at the basket," head coach
Lauren Macer said. "We played better defensively in that half, and saw some things that we definitely need to keep working on. This game is going to be something to learn from and we have some takeaways that will help us grow moving forward."
Part of the big second-half push came from
Jada Marone, who scored 21 points in the third and fourth quarters. Making nine of her 14 attempts, Marone looked unstoppable at moments, scoring most of her points on hard-driven layups.
At one point in the game, Urbana's coaching staff told a defender to sag off Marone because of her ability to drive claiming, 'She's not a shooter.' The five-foot-six guard made the Blue Knights regret the decision, by pulling up and draining a three.
Overall, Marone scored a career-high 27 points while gathering nine rebounds. She also led the team in assists with five.
Seina Adachi was second on the team with 14 points. Forwards
Jessie Stout and
Jen Oduho each recorded a game-high two steals, while
Theresa Parr added four assists.
Two Falcons were perfect from the field as
Julie Kemp scored eight points on four field goals off the bench while starting guard
Katie Karalic was 2-for-2 for four points.
Notre Dame is back in action at home on Wednesday, January 29, for a 5:30 p.m. contest against Concord.
