Game Recap: Baseball |

Day one at MEC Tournament goes to NDC

BECKLEY, W.Va. - It was a late night for the Notre Dame College baseball team as they began their first game at the Mountain East Conference Tournament at 7:40 p.m. The Falcons took on Concord and won 7-1 under the lights Epling Stadium. NDC utilized a pair of spot-on pitchers and momentum-seeking batters in its win on Thursday to advance to day two without a loss.

Notre Dame started the game off offensively after Corey Miley doubled to right field to score Lukas Thompson in the second inning. Concord tied the game up 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run, but that was the last time a Mountain Lion would round the bases.

The Falcons scored a trio of runs in the fifth inning, which was followed up by a second trio in the seventh. Joseph Paskell brought in the go-ahead run with a single to left field before he scored himself on a two-RBI double from Nick Farrell. Three different batters hit in base runners in the seventh inning as Miley, Naja Garcia and Matt Richards each sent teammates to home plate.

On the mound, Tyler Gault held one of the best offensive units in the conference to just one run and six hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Concord averaged 10.5 hits per game prior to its postseason matchup against NDC. Gault earned his eighth wins of the season to improve to 8-4. The junior starting pitcher has now tied for the second-most wins in Notre Dame single-season history.

Relief pitcher Todd Marshall has also tied a Notre Dame milestone as he recorded his seventh save of the season, which is tied for most in NDC single-season history. Marshall threw the final 2.2 innings and kept all his eight batters faced off of first. Recently named First Team All-MEC, Marshall showed off why he deserved the honor, striking out five batters in eight at bats.

Notre Dame will play Charleston tomorrow, May 10, at 7 p.m. Both the Falcons and Golden Eagles won their games on Thursday after UC went 13 innings with Fairmont State to come out victorious 6-5.
