Notre Dame on short end of tight pitching battle in game two

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Against No. 25 ranked Shepherd University, Notre Dame College fell in both games, on Saturday, by a score of 14-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two.

Shepherd pulled ahead early in game one, scoring 10 runs in the first inning. They then scored one run in the second inning, two in the third and one more in the fourth. The game ended after the Falcons' at bat in the top of the fifth inning.

Junior Ariel Linberger had a double and senior Halli Swiger recorded a single for NDC. Nicole Purtell and Lori Sturgill each had two RBI while Taylor Stocks (11-1) got the win for Shepherd after striking out five over three innings.

The second game was a pitching duel through the first three and a half innings. In that time, the two teams combined for just one hit as junior Taylor Olson and Lori Sturgill were matching each other in the pitcher's circle.

Shepherd began the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners over one base. Leann Brown hit a sacrifice fly to plate the first run and Sturgill helped herself out with an RBI single.

The next inning, Shepherd scored their third run of the game when Purtell doubled to score Morgan Cox.

The Falcons were able to get a runner to second base in the fifth inning and sixth inning, but could not push across a run.

Olson (7-9) threw six innings and only allowed three runs, for NDC. She struck out five hitters. Sturgill (8-3) picked up the win for the Rams, allowing just two hits and she also struck out five.

NDC looks to bounce back against Fairmont State University, tomorrow, with games beginning at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
