NDC falls in double-header with Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – After a late comeback in game one gave Findlay University a 4-3 victory, Notre Dame College nearly stole game two, but their comeback fell short as Findlay hung on to win by a score of 10-7.

To begin the Tuesday double-header, NDC put themselves in good position as senior Shelby Stephens and junior Kathryn Smith hit back-to-back two-out doubles. The Falcons scored first and, coming into the game, they held a 9-5 record when plated the initial run.

Neither team scored another run until the bottom of the third inning. A misplayed ball in center field allowed Allison Brunner to reach third base and the next hitter, Amanda DelMonte, hit a sacrifice fly ball to right, tying the game at one for Findlay. Two innings later, the Oilers took the lead after Salwa Al-Hajabed singled, plating the runners from second and third base.

Notre Dame did not waste much time, as freshman Mikaela Fording led off the sixth inning with a walk before Stephens blasted her second home run of the season to tie the game at three.

In the bottom of the sixth, a fly out to left field put Findlay down to their final out of the inning, but Devyn Zuro singled to left field and the go-ahead run crossed home plate.

Stephens led the Falcons with two hits (double, home run) and two RBI. Both DelMonte and Rebecca Harvey had three hits for UF. Caragyn Yanek (1-4) came on to pitch for two inning of relief and picked up the win.

Findlay got off to a strong start in game two, scoring five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second. Notre Dame began their comeback attempt in the third inning. A double to center field by senior Halli Swiger scored sophomore McKenzie Zigmont and senior Erin Calhoun. In the fourth inning, sophomore Katelyn Rheude hit an RBI single, advanced to third on an error and then scored on a wild pitch.

Madelyn Turner led off with a home run for Findlay in the fifth inning but then the Falcons went back to work, down 10-4. In the sixth inning, with one out, sophomore Kelsi Miske singled and then freshman Mikaela Fording belted her team-leading third homer of the season. In the Falcons' last chance to tie or take the lead, a Shelby Stephens solo home run was the only run they could get in the seventh inning. The homer was her second of the double-header and her third extra base hit of the day.

Stephens added two more hits in game two and another RBI. Zigmont also had two hits and Miske, who entered as a pinch hitter, went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. For Findlay, DelMonte, Zuro and Gloria Corona each had two hits. Zuro ended the game with four runs batted in as she had a double and a home run.

Notre Dame plays Urbana University, on Normandy Field, tomorrow. The double-header begins at 3 p.m.
