Nine-run inning pushes NDC over UVa-Wise in game one

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College filled up the scoreboard in game one, leading wire-to-wire with 13 runs on 14 hits as they took down the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 13-2, in game one. UVa-Wise won game two, 9-5, to split the double-header on Thursday afternoon.

To start the day in the first inning, Notre Dame's junior Alyssa Larson and senior Erin Calhoun both singled before a sacrifice bunt moved them up one base. Starting pitcher, sophomore McKenzie Zigmont singled through the right side and NDC went ahead by one. Junior Ariel Linberger and freshman Rhianna Weall both hit RBI singles in the inning, as well. Notre Dame led 3-0.

Kaylee Jones hit a two-run home run for the Cavaliers in the third, and UVa-Wise closed the gap to one. With two outs in Notre Dame's half of the fifth inning, Linberger teed off on a solo home run, sending the ball over the fence in left center field. At the time, the run looked like it could be a large insurance run, putting NDC up 4-2.

However, the most prolific offensive output of the season came in the top of the seventh, and erased all doubt. Before an out was recorded the Falcons had scored three runs with a single by senior Shelby Stephens, junior Taylor Olson reached on an error and senior Halli Swiger hit her first triple of the season. Linberger doubled to right field before freshman Mikaela Fording singled up the middle. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, Stephens hit a two-run double and Olson singled to plate two additional runs. The Falcons scored nine runs, on seven hits, and NDC was helped by two UVa-Wise errors. Notre Dame sent 13 batters to the plate.

The Falcons had not scored 13 runs in a game this season, nor had they scored nine in an inning. In fact, those were the most runs scored in a game since April 25, 2015 and most runs scored in an inning since April 16, 2016.

For the Falcons, Linberger went 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI and came a triple shy of a cycle. Larson recorded three hits while Stephens and Olson had two RBI, each. The NDC offense totaled five extra base hits. In the pitcher's circle, Zigmont (9-11) started the game and got the win after allowing two runs in three inning. Olson recorded her first career save after pitching four perfect innings.

In game two, after trailing 6-0, NDC pulled themselves back into the game. The first two NDC hitters of the fifth inning, reached via error and a hit by pitch. A wild pitch moved both runners up and then Fording singled and advanced to third on an error, allowing both runners to score. Sophomore Katelyn Rheude hit an RBI double and two batters later, Calhoun scored the run with an RBI double. She then scored the final run of the inning on a single by Zigmont, making the score 6-5 in favor of the Cavaliers.

UVa-Wise responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. They would score two more runs in the sixth inning, putting the Cavs on top 9-5.

Notre Dame would get two runners on base in the seventh, but did not score. Zigmont was the ony offensive player with more than one hit in game two. For UVa-Wise, Alexis Miles hit a double, a home run, scored three runs and batted in two runs.

Notre Dame will play their final road games of the season against Concord University, on April 22. First pitch for game one will take place at 1 p.m.
