Softball falls short against Shepherd

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Shepherd University snuck past Notre Dame College in the first game of the day, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to win, 8-6. In the second game, NDC fell by a score of 7-3, on Sunday afternoon.

Shepherd jumped out to a big lead in the first inning, scoring a run on a home run, an error and a single. But the Falcons quickly closed the gap to one run in the bottom half of the inning, as senior Shelby Stephens doubled with two outs and scored on a single by junior Kathryn Smith. Smith crossed the plate after sophomore McKenzie Zigmont doubled to left center.

In the third inning, Stephens grounded out to second base, but recorded an RBI. Smith reached on an error, which scored another run, and two batters later senior Samantha Flowers singled to center field scoring the third run of the inning, putting the Falcons up, 5-3.

The lead did not last long as Kaitlyn Konopka doubled to the gap in left center field, plating two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Lori Sturgill hit a solo homer for Shepherd in the fifth, but freshman Alexis Maciejowski led off the sixth with a solo home run to tie the game at six.

An Ashley Burger double in the seventh inning scored two runs for the Rams, which turned out to be the winning runs.

The two teams combined for nine doubles in the game and three home runs.

Shepherd jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning of game two, scoring on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. They would increase their lead with solo home runs by Kayla Wilt in the second inning and Nicole Purtell in the third inning. Those four runs would be all SU needed to defeat the Falcons.

NDC's runs came from a two-run double by sophomore Maria Payne and a sacrifice fly by senior Erin Calhoun.

Junior Taylor Olson, who struck out three batters in the game for Notre Dame, moved into fifth place in NDC history with 234 career strikeouts.

The Falcons will travel to play Gannon University on March 26. The first game of the double-header is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
