WESTFIELD, Ind. – It twice took the Notre Dame College baseball team extra innings to win games at the University of Indianapolis, but the Falcons came away on top in the three-game series 2-1.
Notre Dame won game one of the series 2-1 in a pitching duel as both pitching staffs got out of the 13-inning game without allowing an earned run.
Kenny Pierson went nine innings to get NDC through the majority of the game. He struck out four in his time on the mound and allowed just six hits after facing 35 batters.
Todd Marshall then came in for the Falcons to close out the last four innings and strike out 10 batters in the process. Marshall received the win after allowing just one hit and lowering his season ERA to 1.29.
UIndy was on the board first on Friday afternoon, scoring its lone run in the sixth inning. Notre Dame responded in the seventh inning as
Zach Santoro tied the game up. The two teams remained scoreless until the top of the 13th inning when a sacrifice fly from
Rick Phillips brought in
Zarek Simkovich. Marshall closed the game out by striking out all three batters in the bottom of the 13th.
Game two on Friday was a back-and-forth affair as the teams traded leads twice and tied things up late.
NDC was the first on the board after
Nick Farrell brought in
Lukas Thompson in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds tied then took the lead in the bottom of the inning after a two-run home run. In the second,
Ryan Kosmynka tied it up 2-2, scoring on a wild pitch, but again UIndy scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Notre Dame made up some ground after Thompson scored
Joseph Paskell in the fourth to make it 4-3 in favor of the home team. Then, in the seventh, Indianapolis scored a pair once again to make it a three-run lead. The Falcons were able to tie the game 6-6 in the eighth inning after Santoro score two on a double and Farrell brought in Phillips on a double of his own, but once again UIndy responded in the bottom of the inning to win 7-6.
Game three was another lengthy pitching battle, lasting 12 innings. But Notre Dame had a big, four-run inning to close out the game and win 5-1. In the sixth inning, Paskell hit a solo home run to put the Falcons up 1-0, which was followed up by a solo home run in the seventh by the Greyhounds.
Ty Shoaff started the game off for the Falcons and lasted six innings without allowing a run. He struck out five batters in his second start for Notre Dame.
Tyler Gault then relieved him for the final six innings to receive the win after allowing just one run and striking out four batters.
Indianapolis struck out a total of 15 batters from NDC throughout the 12 innings.
In the 12th inning, Notre Dame got off to a strong start as Phillips singled and Santoro was walked to put two on base.
Hayden Parker then hit a sacrifice bunt to move them both into scoring position. After that,
Drake May was walked to load the bases. UIndy struck out the next batter to give NDC two outs. With the bases loaded,
Naja Garcia was hit by a pitch to score Phillips and put Notre Dame on top. In the next at bat,
Adam Purdy hit a double to clear the bases and score three more and give NDC a four-run win.
Paskell had a great weekend overall as he was 7-13 in the three games and got on base nine times in 15 appearances. He had at least one extra-base hit in each game as he totaled two doubles, one triple and a home run.
Notre Dame will have a week off before heading to Florida for an eight-game stint at the Russmatt Invitational.
