CANTON, Ohio – After trailing by 15 points early in the third quarter, the Notre Dame College women's basketball team mounted an impressive comeback to lead by the start of quarter four. Carrying the momentum with them through the final 10 minutes, the Falcons won 80-74 to stay undefeated on the year (4-0).
Malone, after missing three shots on its first possession, got off to a hot start, ending the first quarter with 10 makes on 16 attempts to gain a 24-16 lead. Notre Dame recovered in the second quarter to keep things within range, but the Pioneers still came ahead 17-14 to take a 41-30 lead into halftime.
MU was able to score the first four points of the second half to build up a 15-point lead, but it was all Notre Dame after that. The Falcons went on two big runs in the third quarter to eventually gain their first lead of the game.
A 12-2 run put Notre Dame within five at the midpoint of quarter three and another 10-3 push in the final 2:20 put the Falcons over the edge. After missing her first attempt of the second half,
Kyleigh Ramlow went on to make her next three shots, each from beyond the arc. Her final make of the third quarter put Notre Dame within one. The following drive,
Jada Marone gathered a rebound and found
Jessie Stout for a two-point hit to give NDC a 61-60 lead heading into the fourth.
"The team rallied together," said head coach
Lauren Macer. "Our team was able to work for consecutive defensive stops and made big plays on the offensive end."
Managing to keep their distance, Notre Dame held onto the lead until the final buzzer.
It was a full team effort as 13 players entered the game for NDC and six scored in double digits.
"It's great to have different people step up on different nights," Macer said. "Our bend was up and energized, especially in the second half."
Seina Adachi led the Falcons in scoring, filling the stat sheet with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. Joining Adachi in a jump off the page, Marone had an impressive showing off the bench with her first career double-double. The sophomore from Berea, Ohio tallied 14 points to pair with 11 rebounds. She also led the team with six assists and matched Adachi's four steals and two blocks.
Marone gathered a career-high 11 boards, breaking her personal best of seven that she recorded in the team's previous game against Mercyhurst.
"Jada's rebounding has allowed our team to have second chances and extra possessions that we were able to convert on tonight," Macer said. "It's great to have someone who can put themselves in a position to grab the ball any chance they get."
Also reaching double digits were
Jen Oduho,
Kyleigh Ramlow,
Theresa Parr and
Jessie Stout with 13, 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively.
Ramlow was a momentum shifter throughout the night, making four of her five three point attempts. Stout totaled nine rebounds, eight of which came in the final three quarters. And Parr made every shot she took on the night, shooting 3-3 from the field and 5-5 from the free-throw line.
Notre Dame will look to keep things rolling as they begin conference play on Saturday, November 23, at Wheeling. The afternoon tip is set for 12 p.m.
