CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Notre Dame College competed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Final for the first time since 2015, on Sunday. The Falcons went up against No. 10 University of Charleston, on the road, and fell by a score of 4-0.
The Golden Eagles entered the game as the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and NDC was the No. 2 seed. Both teams had won in the Semifinals, on Wednesday, to advance.
Charleston's offense went to work early and in the 18th minute, Christos Charalambous passed to Gabriel Rodriguez, who was one-on-one with NDC goalkeeper
Daniele De Angelis. However, De Angelis made an incredible save, going to the ground to poke it away.
For the next five minutes, NDC had been playing mostly on the defensive side. After bringing the ball all the way down the pitch, a UC pass from outside the box by Eduardo Iranzo bounced low in front of the goal. Rodriguez ran in, dove and headed the ball in, to score the first goal in the 23rd minute.
Ten minutes later, Charalambous took a corner kick that was placed inside the box. It ricocheted off the side of Williams N'Dah's head, hit the post and rolled into the goal.
A minute after that, UC scored their third goal of the half. Ettore Ballestracci hauled in a nice pass from midfield. He settled in the box and then passed to his left where Freddy Tracey put the ball into the net.
NDC had their best chance in the first half with two minutes remaining. Following a free kick, the Falcons had the ball in the box with three Falcons against two UC defenders and the goalkeeper. However, Charleston was able to grab possession and end the threat.
The Falcons were on the attack to begin the second half. Seven minutes into the second stanza, Notre Dame worked the ball into the box after a free kick, nearly finding a hole for a shot. Two minutes later, sophomore
Nicholas Felician worked against a defender before he fell and the Golden Eagles cleared the ball, following a physical play.
In the 60th minute, Felician saw that he had an opening and took a long-range shot, that went high.
Charleston put one more goal on the board in the 80th minute when Charalambous, who was running into the box, took a pass and quickly snuck a shot past De Angelis.
Notre Dame totaled 13 fouls in the game while Charleston had 11. For the first time this season, NDC was held without a corner kick.
