Fairmont State's shooting guides them past Notre Dame

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Notre Dame women's basketball team suffered an 87-59 loss at Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon after FSU made over 50 percent of its shots for just the second time this season.

Things started off in favor of the Fairmont State as the Falcons found themselves down 15-4 after five and a half minutes of play. But NDC came back strong to end the first quarter on a 13-2 run to tie things up 17-17.

FSU once again got hot to start the second quarter and go up by double digits once again. This time the lead stuck as the home team carried its lead throughout the remainder of the game. Fairmont State made 17 of its 30 attempts in the first half and made 13 of 26 in the second. The hot shooting led the hosts to a win despite taking seven fewer field goal attempts throughout the contest.

Those extra shots for the Falcons came from 10 steals and 15 offensive rebounds, compared to four and six in the same categories for FSU. Combined, NDC scored 22 points on second chance opportunities and points off turnovers.

Leading the way on the defensive end was Julie Kemp, who came away with three steals in her first career start. On the offensive end, Jessie Stout highlighted the stats sheet for NDC with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The forward from Stow, Ohio made eight of her 10 field goal attempts.

Seina Adachi was second on the team with 15 points and rounded her performance out with three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Abi Oriti recorded seven points and five rebounds (three offensive) while Tamia Ridley tallied six points and three rebounds in just eight minutes on the court.

Notre Dame will return home on Wednesday, January 23, for a 5:30 p.m. game against Wheeling Jesuit.
