BECKLEY, W.Va. - The Notre Dame College women's soccer team defeated Concord 1-0 after a goal scored in the 71st minute ended the scoring drought. The win improved NDC's record to 4-4, 4-1 MEC and moved CU to 5-3-1, 3-2 MEC.
The teams went traded shots in the first half as the Mountain Lions were able to get off six shots, including two on goal, while the Falcons took four shots, three of which were on target. In the second half, the Notre Dame defense held strong. Although Concord was able to take eight shots and try four corner kicks, NDC did not allow a shot on goal.
Neither team was able to get a shot on goal in the second half until
Isabel Sentle and
Na'pier Ramsey were able to connect on a two-on-one scenario with the goalkeeper. Ramsey set up Sentle to score her first career goal and win the game.
NDC goalkeeper
Kyra McDowell was able to secure her second shutout of the week and third of the season with two saves.
The team was also playing without head coach
Mike Shiels. Assistant coach
Robert Miller filled in during Shiels's absence.
"It was good to get a result on the road against a quality opponent in Concord," Miller said. "There were a lot of different variables for the players to overcome today and I felt like they did that admirably. It was important for us to get a result as a tribute to Coach Shiels and his family."
The Falcons now have 12 points in conference play and sit just one point behind Fairmont State (4-0-1 in MEC).
Notre Dame will face off against FSU on Thursday, October 4, at 4 p.m.
