Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden goal in second OT sends Falcons home with win

WHEELING, W.Va. - After Wheeling Jesuit tied the game in the waning minutes, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team was able to score a golden goal in the second overtime to win its second game this season 2-1.

It was a tight contest throughout the game as the teams failed to put a goal in the net through the first 77 minutes, despite NDC getting off eight shots in the first half, but Maranda Melton was able to be the first to tally a goal after a penalty kick taken from a distance of 50 yards.

The Falcons, however, were only able to hold on to the lead for nearly 10 minutes before the Cardinals scored off a rebounded blocked shot to tie the game in the 88th minute. It was WJU's only shot on goal throughout the game as the home team was out shot 24-6 (10-1 in on goal shots).

Both teams got off shots in the first overtime as NDC led the count three to two, but in the second OT, it was the Falcons who put on the pressure, with two shots in five minutes. The second shot landed to stop the clock and give Notre Dame its second overtime win of the year.

From the left side of the goal, in the box, Katarina Doncevic put the ball perfectly over the goalkeeper's head. The Wheeling Jesuit goalie was able to get a hand on the ball, but it was too high to save completely as the shot found its way into the net.

Head coach Mike Shiels was relieved his team was able to score and win after a tough-fought game.

"I was really happy with how we played," Shiels said. "Unfortunately we didn't get to kill the game off and ended up in overtime, but the players fought hard to get it over the line and I think it was a deserved win."

Notre Dame will return home on Wednesday, September 26, to play Urbana at 4 p.m.
