SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – For the fifth time this season, No. 5 Notre Dame College shutout their opponent, and on Wednesday afternoon, NDC used two goals from freshman
Nicholas Felician to defeat Concord University by a score of 3-0.
The game got off to a slow pace, with both teams playing very well defensively. The Falcons (5-0, 3-0 MEC) had limited chances in the first half, but junior
Arthur Favero took three shots between the 16th minute and the 22nd. One of the shots was saved by the Concord goalkeeper Kyle Brown.
Concord's Maxime Ramioulle nearly gave the Mountain Lions (1-2-1, 1-1-1 MEC) the first goal. In the first half, he had three shots on goal and one was a header that looked like it could possibly sink into the net, but NDC goalkeeper junior
Daniele De Angelis caught the ball in flight.
With less than ten minutes remaining in the half, the game was scoreless and the teams looked like they would go into halftime without a goal. However, in the 43rd minute, senior
Nicholas Carter passed to senior
Reece Daly, who crossed the ball into the box. The pass was placed perfectly for Felician, who used a header to put the ball into the right side of goal.
"We started slow, which was not our intention," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "Concord played in a very organized manner and it made it hard for us to build attacks at times. We kept trying though and it eventually happened for us. The goal before halftime was a huge lift for us and was a just reward for our patience."
Notre Dame nearly had a goal in the 64th minute, but Favero was called offside as he took a pass and was alone with the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Favero hooked a free kick from distance to the right side of the box where Felician was running with defenders around. Felician put touch on the ball and scored just before he ran past the net.
In the 71st minute, NDC continued the onslaught when Felician took a shot that bounced off of the head of Josh Sheffield and rolled to Favero, who scored the Falcons' third goal of the contest.
Notre Dame has now started the season with five shutouts and going back to last season, the Falcons have six consecutive shutouts. De Angelis grabbed a season-high four saves. This was the first multi-goal game for Felician and he has scored three goals in the past two games. Favero led the team with six shots. He has now scored a goal in four of the Falcons' five games.
"Nick (Felician) and Arthur (Favero) just kept doing the basics well," Nolan explained. "Both are very good players and kept testing and probing Concord's defense. Both are very hard and selfless workers."
For Concord, Brown had six saves in the game as the Falcons were aggressive, taking eight shots in both halves. Brown made several very athletic saves throughout the game. Ramioulle finished the game with all four of CU's shots on goal.
On Sunday, Notre Dame will play No. 10 University of Charleston on Mueller Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
