SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In their home opening double-header, Notre Dame College fell in game one by a score of 3-1 to Urbana University and then lost in game two 12-8, on Thursday afternoon.
In the first game, neither team scored until the fourth inning. In fact, both pitchers were perfect through three innings and faced the minimum.
The Blue Knights (5-25, 3-11 MEC) struck in the top of the third inning. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Kylah Swanson walked and then Britney Bonno hit a single to left field that skipped past freshman
Katelyn Rheude. One run scored from third, two runs scored on the error and Bonno went to second base. UU led 3-0.
In the bottom of the inning, senior

Notre Dame took the lead early in the second game. After Urbana put a run on the board in the top of the first, Hoover walked and then the Falcons had three consecutive singles. Calhoun's single plated Hoover to tie the game at one. Following a pitching change, NDC scored a run on a fielder's choice and then went ahead 3-1 on an RBI ground out by junior
Samantha Flowers.
NDC tacked on a run in the bottom of the third inning as junior
Shelby Stephens scored on a ground out by freshman
Brenna Lorek.
The Blue Knights took the lead again with a six run fourth inning. After two runs had already crossed home plate, Mykee Holtz laid down a sacrifice bunt, which resulted in everyone being safe and Riley Curtis scoring from third. Margo Jackson scored on an error and then two more players came home on a triple by Bonno.
Trailing 7-4, NDC cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the fourth as Hoover singled to score
Alyssa Larson and later in the inning, Stephens hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hoover.
Pate hit a three run bomb in the top of the sixth inning and the Falcons answered with a two-run home run by
Erin Calhoun in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 10-8 in favor of Urbana.
The Blue Knights then scored two additional runs in the seventh and won the game 12-8.
For NDC, Calhoun and Stephens each had two hits. Calhoun finished with three RBI in the game and four RBI on the day.
Jade Laviolette (2-3) got the win for Urbana as she entered the game for the starting pitcher, Carly Allen, who only faced four batters. Laviolette allowed three runs, one earned in three innings. The first five hitters in UU's lineup had 11 of their 13 hits and nine of their 11 RBI.
"We are going to focus on our hitters coming through with runners on base and our pitching needs to tighten up," head coach
Amy Kyler said, after both games. "We are a solid team but have some mental items that we will continue to address."
The Falcons will play Fairmont State University, at home, on April 7. First pitch for game one of the double-header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
