CLERMONT, Fla. – Notre Dame College was unable to play four games at the beginning of their spring break trip because of weather and delayed flights. However, the Falcons have put together a 3-4 record in their first three days of action in Florida.
On Monday, the Falcons began with a tough couple of games, including a 3-0 loss to Grand Valley State University and a 4-2 loss to Wayne State College. However, in their third game of the day, they beat the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown by a score of 6-2.
In the win over Pitt-Johnstown, NDC received seven strong innings from sophomore
Taylor Olson who allowed only two runs and eight hits. She picked up her first win of the season. Junior
Erin Calhoun went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Senior
Amy Hoover and junior
Halli Swiger recorded two hits. Swiger had two RBI and Hoover scored twice. The Falcons took the lead in the sixth inning, scoring four runs with an RBI single by Swiger, a groundout which scored a run and a two run double by Calhoun.
NDC lost 6-2 on Tuesday against Minnesota State University-Moorhead. The Falcons hit the ball well, accumulating 10 hits in the game, however, they could not score until the sixth and seventh innings. Freshman
Kim Crookston had three hits and Hoover went 3-for-3 with an RBI.
In the second game of the day, Notre Dame played well against Upper Iowa University, but fell 7-6 in 10 innings. Junior
Shelby Stephens went 3-for-5 at the plate and five players had an RBI. Olson started and went seven innings allowing three earned runs and striking out six batters. She faced two batters in the eighth inning.
Tied at one going into extra innings, NDC put four runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles and a fielder's choice RBI. However, UIU scored four in the bottom of the eighth and then scored two in the bottom of the 10th inning to win.
Notre Dame had a very good day on March 7, sweeping their double header with Wilmington University. In game one, NDC took a 3-2 lead after two innings, which included a solo home run by Stephens in the first inning. The Falcons sealed the game with a sacrifice fly by freshman
McKenzie Zigmont in the bottom of the sixth inning, to go up 4-2. Wilmington would score one run in the top of the seventh, but Notre Dame held on to win 4-3. Stephens went 2-for-3 and hitters two through five in the Falcons' order were 5-for-12, in the game.
Taylor Olson earned the win with seven innings in the pitching circle, allowing two earned runs and walking only three batters.
The Falcons won the second game of the day, 10-2. NDC scored six runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open. Over those two innings, Stephens put together a single, a double and four RBI. Zigmont picked up the victory after she pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run.
Hoover is 8-for-18 (.444 batting average) in the six games that she has seen action while Stephens leads the team with 10 hits. Swiger has knocked in eight runs. Olson has gone 2-0 with a 3.12 earned run average over five games and four starts.
Notre Dame still has six games left on their schedule in Clermont, Fla. They will play Felician College and Bentley University on March 8, at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
