Falcons wrap up play in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Notre Dame College baseball team suffered losses to Walsh, Malone, Saint Anselm, and Ashland at the end of the week and will come home with a season record of 2-11 heading into conference play.

On Thursday, the Falcons got off to a good start against Walsh as Drake May hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Ricky Phillips and go up 1-0 in the opening inning. Walsh replied with two runs in the second inning, but NDC climbed back to a 4-2 lead with another sacrifice fly in the third inning and a two-run fourth that was capped off with Naja Garcia batting in Nick Farrell

Walsh would tie the game 4-4 in the six inning before scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to win 5-4. Starting pitcher Todd Marshall struck out four batters while reliever Tyler Dalzell fanned two batter and caught one looking.

Notre Dame played twice Friday, suffering an 8-0 loss to Malone before an exciting 9-8 loss to Saint Anselm.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first, but NDC doubled their output to go up 2-1. Garcia hit an RBI single to bring in the first run and scored the second. Saint Anselm opened things up in the third inning, scoring four runs to take back the led 5-2. The Falcons closed things with a run of their own. Both teams would score twice in fourth inning to make it 7-5.

With a run in the sixth and another in the top of the eighth, Notre Dame found itself down 9-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. Zach Santoro would cut into the Hawks' lead with a double that scored two runs and put May on third. Phillips would bring in May with a single to bring the game within one, but that's where the scoring would halt.

Ashland would outscore NDC 13-2 in the Falcons final game in Florida. The team would get on base, with 12 hits, but struggled to get base runners to home plate.

Notre Dame will start Mountain East Conference play on Saturday, March 17 at West Virginia State. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
