LIVONIA, Mich. – Notre Dame College scores the final six goals of the first half and then has a big offensive second half in their 16-4 win over Madonna University, on Sunday.
The first half started slowly for Notre Dame who allowed two goals within the first five minutes of the game. Christy Battersby and Valarie Patterson scored for Madonna.
Junior
Taylor Henderson came up big, as she scored NDC's first goal of the season with 25:07 to go in the first half, to put the Falcons on the scoreboard.
NDC would put five additional goals into the back of the net in the final 25 minutes of the half. Henderson scored two of the five goals, three overall in the first half, and assisting on freshman
Natalia Gardner's first goal. Sophomore
Victoria Martin and freshman
Selena Carter both scored a goal.
NDC led 6-2 at halftime, taking 12 shots. On the defensive side, the Falcons stepped up, including freshman goal keeper
Morgan Belting. She recorded 8 saves. The Crusaders took 11 shots.
The Falcons opened up the game in the second half. In the first ten minutes of action, Henderson scored her fourth goal of the game and senior
Katherine Elsenbeck scored back-to-back goals.
MU scored their first goal of the half at the 22:48-mark when Brittney Leist snuck one past Belting.
Freshman
Abigail Plewes and Henderson then scored within three minutes of each other for the Falcons. Carter scored back-to-back goals and then freshman
Emily Thomson scored two goals in a row. Gardner scored the final goal of the contest with 18-seconds remaining, representing the 10th goal in the second half.
"We started out slow but when we settled down and addressed a few things I was happy with how our confidence grew as the game went on," said head coach
Pam Jenkins. "We are young and we progressed as the game went on. It's early and we have a lot more games to go but this was a great first step."
Five players scored multiple goals while Henderson put five goals into the net on seven shots and Carter scored three goals on three shots. Carter also won five draw controls. Belting recorded 13 saves. NDC earned seven draw controls in the second half and 12 in the game. The Falcons were 18-for-25 on clear attempts.
Leist scored two goals on three shots for Madonna. Dana Haney scooped up seven ground balls. The Marauders went 6-for-10 in clear attempts.
Notre Dame will play Millersville University on March 3, in Millersville, Pa. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
