BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - The Notre Dame College women's soccer (13-4-2) team fell 1-0 to West Virginia Wesleyan (17-2-1) in the Mountain East Conference Championship game.
Almost 77 minutes went by in the game with neither team scoring, but it was the Bobcats who broke the streak with a goal from Shannon Shawgo. Shawgo scored on a header with just over 13 minutes left in the game, giving her team the lead to close it out.
This is the third MEC Tournament Championship won by WVWC with wins in 2013 and 2015 prior. The Falcons have won the other two championships on 2014 and 2016.
Despite the outcome, it was Notre Dame that made moves offensively with 13 total shots and six corner kicks compared to nine and two, respectively. The Falcons struggled to get quality looks in the second half after shooting 10 times in the first 45 minutes. By comparison, the Bobcats struggled in the first half, recorded zero shots on goal.
Alexis Manoa led the team with four shots taken with one on goal while
Lauren Chaney took three shots with two on goal. Goalkeeper
Kyra McDowell saved three shots attempted by the Bobcats.
Manoa and
Brooke LeForce were both named to the 2017 MEC All-Tournament Team for their play in the games against Concord and WVWC.
Notre Dame will find out if it makes the NCAA Tournament tomorrow, November 6 during the NCAA's Selection Show. The show is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com.
