WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Notre Dame College women's soccer team had its NCAA Tournament run cut short as No. 18 West Chester earned a spot in the Sweet 16 after a 5-4 result in penalty kicks. Officially the game result is a 0-0 tie after the teams played 110 minutes in regulation and two overtimes.
Throughout the contest, the Golden Rams out shot the Falcons 29-10, but freshman goalkeeper
Kyra McDowell withstood the attack. McDowell earned 10 saves as the goalkeeper during the entire 110 minutes. The Ogden, Utah native also faced 11 corner kicks. It was just the sixth time (and the first since October 18, 2015) in NDC's NCAA Division II history that a goalkeeper earned double-digit saves.
McDowell kept her strong performance going in the penalty kicks, stopping the first two attempts from WCU. Notre Dame made its first two shots, but ultimately the kicks ended in 5-4 in West Chester's favor in the seventh round.
The Falcons accomplished many things this season, including the first ever NCAA Tournament win in program history. NDC's 14 wins this season is also an NCAA Division II record for the program.
Notre Dame ended the season with a 14-4-3 record. The Falcons expect to graduate 11 players this year.
