FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Notre Dame College women's soccer team (9-3-2) tied Fairmont State (4-4-6) on Sunday 1-1 after a goal in the 83rd minute was scored by the Falcons.
Things were fairly even in the first half of play, but FSU found its way on the board with less than 90 seconds before halftime. Abigail Johnson rebounded the ball off a save by freshman goalkeeper
Kyra McDowell. McDowell finished the game with five saves.
Notre Dame was aggressive in the second half, getting off a total of 12 shots, but couldn't get anything past Fairmont State until the game was coming to an end.
Jillian Doss, off a penalty kick, was able to tie the game 1-1 to force overtime and save the Falcons from back-to-back losses.Â
In the first overtime, McDowell came up with a clutch save as FSU was able to get off two shots. NDC shot the ball once in the two overtime periods and walked away with its second tie of the season.Â
Head coach
Mike Shiels was happy with the way his team recovered in the second half, but would've liked to come home with a win.
"We're disappointed to come away with a draw, but it was a much better performance after a slow first half. We were much better through the remainder of the game and really felt that we were going to get that second goal."
Notre Dame will play at home against Shepherd on Wednesday, October 18, at 3 p.m.Â
