Joe Staab was named the Defensive Coordinator for the Notre Dame College football program prior to the 2016 season. He also serves as the team's Linebackers Coach.
In 2017, the Falcon defense ranked third in scoring in the Mountain East. NDC did well against opponents trying to get first downs as the team ranked second in opponents' third-down conversions (33.1 percent) and first in fourth-down conversions (29.2 percent).
In his first season with NDC, Staab led the Falcons to record the third best defense in the MEC on their way to a 9-2 record and the school's first time in the Top 25 rankings.
In two seasons with the Falcons, Staab has coached seven all-conference players. Defensive Lineman, Claudy Mathieu set the program records for tackles for a loss (43.5), sacks (26) and forced fumbles (five) under Staab's guidance.
Before joining Notre Dame, Staab coached with the San Francisco 49ers, San Jose State University and the University of San Diego, where he played from 2004-08.
Staab served as a Defensive Assistant with the 49ers during the 2015 off season after three years with San Jose State. At SJSU, he spent time as the Linebackers Coach, Safeties Coach and Camp Coordinator. He helped lead the Spartans to a second-ranked pass defense and a 2015 Cure Bowl Campionship.
While coaching at the University of San Diego, Staab served as the Recruiting Coordinator and Safeties coach helping to lead the Toreros to two Pioneer Football League Championships.
During his time at San Jose State and the University of San Diego, Staab coached mutliple players to earn both conference and national recognition.
Staab graduated from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. As a player for the Toreros, he went 40-6 and won two Mid-Major National Championships and three Pioneer Football League Championships.
