WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons used a pair of defensive touchdowns and a strong defensive effort to close out the 2013 season with a 30-13 victory over West Liberty.
The victory for the Falcons (5-6, 4-5) was their second in a row on the road after losing their first four road contests this season, and tied a record for most overall victories in a season. West Liberty (3-8, 3-6) ends the season on a five game losing streak with the loss.
Notre Dame used a pair of pick sixes to pave their way to a victory, and it was
Akyee Henderson who took them back to the house on both occasions.Â
The Notre Dame defense set the tone right away, as
Mo May picked off West Liberty's first pass, on their first play of the day from scrimmage. On West Liberty's second drive, Henderson turned in his first of two pick sixes, on a 43-yard interception returned for a touchdown to give Notre Dame the early lead.Â
West Liberty took advantage of great field position on a drive that started at the NDC 37, and scored their first points of the day on a 34-yard field goal from Brian Arbes, with 3:03 left in the first quarter.Â
Notre Dame capitalized on great field position with just three minutes left in the second quarter, as they took over at the WLU 33 yard line and on the first play of the drive,
Pedro Powell ran it in for a touchdown to give the Falcons a 14-3 lead at the half.
NDC dominated the opening half defensively, as they forced a pair of turnovers, while limiting West Liberty to just 81 yards of offense and three first downs.Â
The Hilltoppers scored first in the second half, as Arbes hit a 38-yard field goal after Andrew Faraimo's interception set them up with great field position inside NDC territory.Â
The Falcons increased their lead at the end of the third quarter, as
Kyle Kaplan drilled a 27-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a 17-6 lead.Â
On West Liberty's next drive, the Falcon defense came up with the play of the game. Four plays into the drive the Hilltoppers entered Notre Dame territory, before Henderson struck again, with a 67-yard interception returned for a touchdown to put Notre Dame ahead, 24-6.
The Hilltoppers wouldn't go away easily, as they used incredible field position to set up their final score of the game. Isaiah Moody returned a punt to the Notre Dame 15-yard line, setting up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Dylan LaGarde to Dylan Potts.Â
West Liberty tried an onside kick after the touchdown, but
Michael Fields secured it and returned it to the Hilltopper 25 yard line. On third down and 10, Notre Dame was able to seal the deal, as
Ray Russ connected with
Mikhail Morgan on a 25-yard touchdown pass.Â
The Notre Dame defense allowed a season low, 13 points, registered five sacks on the day, and held the Hilltoppers to an 11.7-percent (2-for-17) clip on third downs. They also limited WLU to just 222 yards of total offense.Â
In the final game of his career, Powell rushed for 132 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown, finishing his remarkable career as the program's all-time leading rusher with 4,774 yards rushing in his career. Russ completed 15-of-32 passes for 141 yards, a touchdown a pick. Russ threw a touchdown pass in every game this season. Morgan led all NDC receivers with seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.Â
Hayden Davis paced with Falcons in tackles with 14, while
Darius James had 2.5 sacks on the day. Notre Dame registered 10 tackles for a loss on the afternoon.
