Postgame Notes -- NDC vs. St. Joseph's

Notre Dame utilizes turnovers, record performances in 45-14 victory

LYNDHURST, Ohio -- With its big win on Saturday, Notre Dame reprised a 2010 loss and doubled its 2010 win total.

GAME NOTES ...

* NDC's game captains were defensive lineman Brandon Bucknell, corner back Spencer Krebs, special-teams player Brandon Hummer, quarterback Rob Partridge and running back Pedro Powell.

* With the victory, NDC has doubled its 2010 win total of two (2-9 record).  The win marks the first time the Falcons have won three games in a row.  NDC has scored 109 points (36.3 points per game) over their three straight victories.

* The win marked NDC's first in five tries against a program from the state of Indiana.  Notre Dame has now faced St. Joseph's twice and the series is even, 1-1.  SJC downed the Falcons, 37-7, last year (Oct. 9, 2010) in Rensselaer, Ind.

* The game marked Notre Dame's third come-from-behind victory, and the 14-point deficit which was erased marks the program's best comeback.

* The game was marred by 25 penalties (nine on Notre Dame and 16 on St. Joseph's).  NDC's penalties added up to 146 yards, the most in program history.

NOTING THE OFFENSE ...

* Another week, another slew of single-game records for the NDC offense.  On Saturday, running back Pedro Powell logged three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), which is a new program-best for a single game.  Powell's 75-yard TD in the third quarter marked the longest rush in NDC history. … Quarterback Rob Partridge's three TD passes in the game established a new mark as did his 23 completions. … Forty-five points scored is a new record, and so are the six TDs scored by the Falcons. … NDC's 6.9 yards-per-rush average is a new single-game mark. … Rob Partridge and backup quarterback Ray Russ combined for 232 passing yards, a new mark.

* Over their last three games, the Falcon offense has piled up 109 points on 67 first downs and 1,206 total yards.  For the season, NDC is now averaging 25.3 points per game.  The Falcons averaged 10.4 points per contest.

* Sophomore running back Pedro Powell garnered his fourth straight 100-yard game with a season-high 168-yard performance against the Pumas.  Powell picked up his 168 yards on just 19 carries; he averaged 8.8 yards per attempt.

* Powell had two catches on the day, one of which produced his first career receiving touchdown.  The Lakota East High School product also dropped a ball in the end zone, nixing what could have been a four-TD game.

* Powell's 168 yards mark his second-biggest rushing output in 17 career games.  He rushed for a program-record 236 yards at Central State on Oct. 2, 2010. … Powell's streak of 100-yard games in nothing new.  The Liberty, Ohio, native bolted for the century mark in six straight games (Sept. 18-Oct. 30) last season.

* Notre Dame exhibited a quick-strike offensive style against a Puma defense that came into the game ranked 127th in NCAA-II for points allowed (36.0 PPG).  The Falcons had seven scoring drives; only one lasted longer than three-and-a-half minutes.  NDC scored three times in less than one minute; two of those were on one-play drives.

* Quarterback Rob Partridge has now tossed seven touchdown passes over the last three games.  He has eight on the season.  On Saturday he was not sacked (the NDC front five didn't allow a sack all game), nor did he throw an interception. … The game marked Notre Dame's first this season in which it didn't allow a sack or throw an interception.

* Wide receivers Michael Fields and Keifer Titus each caught TD passes in the game.  They now each have two TD receptions on the season. … Freshman tight end Ray J. Brown notched a career-long 26-yard catch, and fellow freshman Colton Wallace registered his first career reception. … Ten different NDC players caught a pass in the game.

* NDC showed a great deal of balance on offense.  The Falcons ran 39 passing plays and 33 runs.  They had 232 yards through the air and 229 on the ground.  They scored three TDs on pass plays and three on rushes.  In first downs, NDC produced 12 through the air and nine on the ground.

* The Falcons were a perfect 6-of-6 in a half-dozen trips to the red zone.

* NDC ran a season-high 72 offensive plays.

* Notre Dame fumbled twice in the game and has now coughed up the ball 15 times in six games this season (NDC has lost six of those 15).

NOTING THE DEFENSE ...

* The Falcon defense forced a season-high four turnovers in the game.  NDC has forced 10 turnovers in its three-game winning streak.  The Falcons have been on the plus side of the turnover ledger in each of their three straight victories.

* Notre Dame held St. Joseph's to 101 rushing yards on 33 attempts.  Over the last two weeks, the Blue & White run defense has been stingy, allowing just 3.0 yards per rush.

* The Falcons recorded one sack in the game (Stanley Gordon).  NDC now has at least one sack in three straight games.

* NDC managed five tackles for loss with Sylvester Flowers picking up two of those (a career-best).  Flowers had a season-high nine stops in the game.  He and Hayden Davis each garnered six solo tackles (career highs for both).

* Notre Dame held SJC to a 2-for-14 mark on third-down conversions and a 1-of-4 afternoon in converting on fourth down.

* The Falcons forced five three-and-outs.  They have now forced 11 over the last two weeks.

* Sophomore safety Bo Grunder became the second NDC player to register two interceptions in a game with the first picks of his career.  John Hyde had two interceptions in last year's Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) game (Sept. 4, 2010).

* Sophomore Spencer Krebs stuffed the stat sheet with five tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass break-up.

* The NDC defense has allowed just four touchdowns over the team's three-game win streak (one of Central State's TDs last week was scored by its defense).  For the season, Notre Dame as a whole has allowed 19.2 PPG.

NOTING THE SPECIAL TEAMS ...

* Freshman placekicker Chris McClearn recorded his fifth field goal of the season on a 23-yarder near the end of the first half.  McClearn is now four for his last five.

* Punter Rob Partridge put three kicks inside the Pumas' 20, a season-high.  Partridge averaged 37.2 yards per effort on six punts.
